The context bundle

The bundle is what an agent pod sees at turn 0. It is rendered by the operator (internal/prompt/bundle.go), golden-file tested, and delivered as the text of the wrapper's POST /v1/messages. Long context first, instructions last.

Every pod's turn-0 gets the same render. There is no resume mode and no continuation preamble. --resume, sessionID, conversationObjectKey and HANDOFF_KEY are all gone. The bundle IS the continuation state - and what carries forward between pods is Task.status.notes.


The bundle

Element order is fixed: issue* (ascending by repo, then number), merge_request* (same ordering), events?, notes?. Attribute order is fixed as written. Timestamps are RFC3339 UTC to the minute (2006-01-02T15:04Z) - second precision is prompt noise and churns the golden file.

Rules: every pod's turn-0 gets the same render (no resume mode, no continuation preamble); empty sections are omitted entirely (no <comments/>, no <notes/>); the bundle carries no diffs and no subtasks. The bundle has a hard byte budget and elides oldest comments first, behind an explicit marker - see The byte budget. "No cap" is revoked.

total/rendered/elided are on EVERY <comments> element, always - even when nothing was elided. The attributes are unconditional: an agent must never have to infer completeness from the absence of an attribute.


Escaping

Every text node AND every attribute value is escaped with the full set:

No CDATA anywhere - a body containing ]]> escapes CDATA too.

This is not cosmetic. A fork PR whose head branch is named

Untrusted-content marking. Every note carries source:

source="agent" is stamped for every note whose agent != "operator". Only the operator's in-process writer produces source="operator"; the REST notes endpoint cannot (it 409s when status.agentKind is empty rather than defaulting).

The standing line. Every assignment section ends with, verbatim:

The byte budget

The bundle is: title + body + the last N comments, under a hard byte budget. Project.spec.maxBundleBytes, default 400,000 bytes (~100k tokens).

"No cap" was a permanent wedge, not a simplification: an Issue near even half the etcd ceiling renders to ~190k tokens, the API 400s on the oversized prompt, the turn never completes, and the operator retries the same bundle forever - a Task that can never make progress and never fails, burning a pod slot indefinitely.

The render algorithm is deterministic - no summarization and no model call (the render path must stay golden-testable and offline-testable, and must not acquire a second failure mode on the hot path to every turn):

1. render the skeleton: task_context attrs, every issue/MR title+body+metadata,
   every note, the events block, the assignment.
2. if it already exceeds maxBundleBytes: elide NOTES oldest-first, then issue/MR
   BODIES (truncate to 4096 with a marker). This is the pathological case; log
   WARN.
3. otherwise, fill the remaining budget with COMMENTS, NEWEST FIRST, across all
   issues and MRs proportionally to their thread length.
4. for every thread where any comment was left out, emit the marker element in
   place of the elided ones.

The marker is mandatory on BOTH lists. Never silently lie about completeness:

Never silently lie about completeness. The fetch attribute names the exact tool call that retrieves the full thread, so an agent that needs the elided history has a documented way to get it.


Mid-flight events

Enqueue filter, applied by the webhook BEFORE an event is appended:

DROP the event when author == Project.spec.scm.botLogin (IsBot).

Without it, the operator's own park comment lands in the pending-events queue and un-parks the Task the operator just parked - a fully autonomous hallucinated-approval-to-prod path. This is the same bot-author gate the approval-comment check already uses.

Cap: Go-side, drop-oldest, at 20, before the write.

Render - events before the bundle (the delta first, then the refreshed baseline). Delivered at the turn boundary; if no pod is running, one spawns and they ride in turn-0.

The broad-context index

Served to refine (all project Tasks), brainstorm (prior brainstorms), and incident (prior incidents) agent kinds. It precedes the caller's own full bundle.

scope is all|brainstorm|incident. age is coarse (4h, 26h, 3d). <body> is truncated to 500 chars. Empty <issues>/<mrs> are omitted. Any indexed Task's full bundle is pulled on demand via task_context(task=<name>).

The index is itself bounded: at most 100 <task> entries, newest first, and it counts against maxBundleBytes like everything else.
